Media Task 8
Media is a kind of tool which can be used to inform society. With the help of media, we can follow up new developments, facts or occasions. In my point of view, media is a kind of school and with this school; I learn everything about my country, society and outside world. It can affect my opinions and position in my society. I mean that with the help of news, I can come up with many ideas about political parties, facts or figures. For example, today we can watch or listen political speech of each political figure from TVs or radios. Afterwards, in elections, I remember these kinds of speeches, after I give my vote to each political party. In this situation, media become a kind of tool which can affect my future actions. When I take decisions in terms of economy and politics, media become very beneficial tool for me. For this reason, in the terms of media, I prefer to trace many type of media brands our international media because I know that they affect my opinions. I think that if I use different types of media brands, I can come up with more independent ideas and use them in a more beneficial way.

Today, we watch, read or listen different sort of media types. Sometimes, we prefer to look international media rather than our national media. Then, we can see many differences between them. In a most accurate way, objectivity and content of news are two ways which can differentiate our media from international one. In Turkish media, news are given in a more subjective way. First of all, I think that our national values are become more important rather than objectivity. Most newsmakers try to present more subjective news which can praise our national values. For example; succession of operations which related to PKK is more dominant new rather than new economic system. Producers assign more time or more space in TV news or newspapers for this kind of news. In this situation, we can’t say the same thing for international media. In my opinion, it is more objective than Turkish media. In this media, producers do not assign lot of time as did by their Turkish counterparts. Also, they do not try to present or protect their national values. In a more accurate way, I think that they do not consider their national values. Also, to increase objectivity, they focus on details and sometimes they rely on more accurate statistics.

We know that big companies can control the Tv prorograms or flow of broadcast with the help of money and advertisiment methods. However, as Murrow stated that, TVs and radios can bu used for informing and showing relaties to society. At this point of view, rather than money-making machines, Tvs and radios may become beneficial tools which can stimulate society. On the other hand, Murrow highlighted that if they become a money-making tools, they start to insulate society from the hard and demanding raelities. I think that with this situation, these instruments become 1984’s telescreens which managed by business world’s Big Brothers.

At first, when the TV was invented, many people can say Tv was a kind of instrument which can entairtain and serve arts at the same time.People can enjoy and have a wonderful time at the front of the TV.”However, things are changed today.TVs become “mirrors” which show “worthless” things at all. When I watch Big Brother type of contest programs, sorry but I can’t enjoy and for me, they have a no function. These programs are “only” basic and boring programs. Watching them is equal to wasting time. On the other hand, they are too exhibionist. I mean that they showed too much voyeuristic things. Then, they maked these programs too boring and destroy the each program beneficial and craetive content.

I accept that TV gives damage to family life, rituals and communication between family members especially between parents and children. However, if we look today, we can see the beneficial way of TVs. I mean that we can look more optimistic to this problem (as writer can’t foresee this). The new “beneficial” electronic instrument which name is computer was invented. I think that it is more dangerous than TV. We can say that TV lost its damaging effect against computers. Let me give an example; in general, I can talk my parents only in dinner or after dinner to midnight. Yes, we know that eating dinner to the front of TV can damage our communication. However, after dinner if I go to my room and start using my computer, this communication become too worse as similar to writer mentioned the multiple set of TV’s effect. On the other hand, we have only one TV and after dinner, if we watch TV together, we can share our daily experiences too. Because, in this situation, TV becomes only a tool which can help our family life. I can talk my parents and create communication only with the help of watching TV after dinner.

n this story, we can see the important role of radio. It seems like inmate object which can attract people. More than this, in Enormous Radio, this interesting object became a type of legate which transmitted the other peoples’ conservations, their enjoyment or sadness, to Westcotts. I’m not sure but maybe with it, writer aimed to show the importance of radio in these peoples’ daily lives. Maybe, different from this point of view, radios can be seen as bad things which break the family bonds or they destroy the communication between each family member. Since, if we look the whole story, first of all, Westcotts couples were very happy but in the end, after this enormous radio, they start to judge their relationships and start to arguing.

In Babam ve Oğlum movie, we can see the typical example of father- son conflict. Sadık who was the son of landowner Hüseyin in Aegean region in the Turkey, went to the Istanbul to took university education about journalism in the end of 1979s. However, his father did not want to it. Hüseyin thought that his son should become an agriculture engineer and he will take care of his land. Sadık went to Istanbul and became a journalist in the beginning of 1980. Also, he supported the communism and against to his father because of his job. After military coup, he decided to go to his father house and leave his son in this house because during his son’s birth, he lost his wife. With this event (meeting son and father after many years), conflict was risen. They broke down their taciturnity and always discuss about past and decision which was made by Sadık. He always criticized his father’s job and refused to improve it.
As similar to the many Turkish father, Hüseyin want that his son may take over and improve his job. If we look to many Turkish families (especially traditional ones) we can see the same condition. At that time there were few fathers or parents who did not affect their children future desires. I mean that few parents especially fathers (because in the rural areas, father is a dominant member of each family) did not intervene their children’s future. A result of these situations, Hüseyin becomes a symbol of traditional father in Turkish family as we see same examples in Turkish society especially in rural areas
To sum of conflict between Hüseyin and Sadık was appeared as a result of different life perspectives among these two characters
Family | Comment (1)Same sex marriage and procreation
Today, same-sex marriage is an important issue which brings many debates to the society in terms of ethics and morality. I think that marriage is a legal act and it does not change in the heterosexual marriage or homosexual one. As Wedgwood mentioned, both of type of marriage has legal rights in terms of economy and social benefits. However, with this type of marriage, procreation issue is appeared. We knew that one of the aims of heterosexual marriage is the procreation. ( in general and for society). With out it, many countries will suffer accordingly and in these countries, population of elders will increase as we see in the today’s most developed countries. In my opinion, homo sexual marriage can be for only minority maybe but it can contribute to this situation and threaten to existence of next generation.
Uncategorized | Comment (1)Tiny Smilling Daddy
In Tiny Smiling Daddy story, typical father- his daughter relationship was reflected. In this relationship, miscommunication and breaking the family bonds especially between Kitty and her parents was seen. I think that, this kind of conflict may come from her childhood especially the specific event of taking ethics and morality from parents. Maybe, it is a typical example of generalization but we can say that if parents can give good ethics and morality to their child, in adulthood, this child will become good person and he/she can get along with his/her parents. Now to return relationship in this story, we may say that behaviors of Kitty reflect her morality which did not come from her parent (maybe gained from real life but not from family). I mean that she did not take any morality from her parents especially form her father.

Where are you going, where have you been?” is a typical story which reflects the result of youth subculture. I mean that writer try to draw a picture of sub youth culture with the help using character Arnold Friend (who was the most common example of this culture in the terms of his talking and style) , music and its effects. I think that text title symbolizes the changes in American society especially among youth population. Maybe, with this title, writer aims that readers start to think about 1960’s American society and changes in this society especially development of sub youth culture. Also , she attracted attention of reader about how this change reflect to the youth culture of America
